International Conference
24th & 25th November 2023, in Leszno (Poland)
Organised by the Polish Center for Torture Survivors, in collaboration with the Fondation Médecins du Monde, SEMA Ukraine, WAPP Support Project Association Leszno, the Association Défense de la Démocratie en Pologne and the French association Pour l'Ukraine, pour leur liberté et la nôtre.
In view of the numerous cases of sexual violence and torture documented since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the aim of the conference was to share the experience gained in Kosovo, Bosnia, etc. to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken to support people dealing with trauma.
The conference was attended by a large Ukrainian delegation, led by SEMA-Ukraine, one of the event's co-organisers. Eight of its members were present and took an active part in the debates, sharing their knowledge of current procedures in Ukraine and the care provided to survivors.
They were accompanied by members of Ukrainian survivor support organisations and, in particular, a group of psychotherapists from a number of Ukrainian towns working with people suffering from war-related trauma.
The holistic approach to trauma advocated by the multidisciplinary team at the Polish Center for Torture Survivors led to the organisation of four round tables (followed by four workshops), addressing the psychological and therapeutic issues, legal difficulties and social problems involved in supporting survivors of sexual crimes, as well as the journalistic challenges involved in raising awareness of this complex subject among a wide audience.
